It comes from Pirke Avot – the Ethics of Our Ancestors.
Pirke Avot is a collection of ethical teachings, maxims, and character advice. It compiles the sayings of roughly 60 leading rabbinic sages from the era spanning around 200 BCE to 200 CE. Many modern phrases and slogans can trace their roots to this wisdom (Don’t judge a book by its cover and the Nike “Just Do It” campaign are examples).
