Competitive Swimming for Every Generation

Swimming at the JCA this summer will look a little different – because we are not letting the children have all the fun! Make sure your young swimmers come to the JCA Makos Summer Swim Team Kickoff Party on Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 pm to meet their coaches while enjoying popcorn and snow cones, and to be fitted for the Makos swag. Then get ready to do more than cheer for your children this summer season. For the first time in JCA history, we are offering a friendly but competitive Adult Makos Swim Team!

Relive your glory days when you swam 25 yards and received lollipops at the finish line. But seriously, these races will be 25-50 yards and I will reward you with candy. We are not letting age get in the way, the Grown-up Makos Swim Team is for adults ages 18-99 (exceptions will be made for those 100+). This is a laid-back adult swim league with no age limit, no pressure, no disqualifications, and lots of fun! The season starts Sunday, June 15; we will enjoy friendly competition with other adult swimmers around town. Please email me with any questions [email protected] and follow this link to join the first-ever Grown-up Makos Swim Team.

After the kickoff party, the JCA Makos Summer Swim Team practice begins May 1.
We practice May 1 – July 15 and compete in six friendly swim meets throughout the summer, ending with the River City Swim League Championships, Jul 18 – 20.  Every child who swims at least three of the six regular season meets for our Makos swim team qualifies for the championships held at Bolles High School.

While graduation from our swim lesson program is not required, children must demonstrate the standards of our American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4: freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards and breaststroke and butterfly for 15 yards. Our group and private lesson programs utilize a level-by-level curriculum, designed to prepare children for our Makos Swim Team experience. By no means are strokes expected to be perfect but from this coach’s perspective, harnessing the basics of each in a hands-on lesson environment is vital to the swimmer’s development before advancing to a hands-off approach with swimmers on the Makos team.

I know the kids in our pool are ready to start swimming for the summer season and I hope all of the adults are too! Let’s make a splash this summer, the Howard and Joy Korman Outdoor Pool opens for the season on April 1.
Remember to use the My J app to reserve your lap lanes in advance. You can learn more about our Aquatics programs for adults and children at the Jewish Community Alliance on our website, jcajax.org.
