Bold City’s Best Local Event: The Berman Family JCA Concert Series
By Heather Terrill, J Institute Director
February 04, 2025
We have the privilege of hosting a series of talented, young musicians at our Berman Family JCA Concert Series every year. This free series was started by charter members, Edith and Milton Berman who had a passion for classical music and wanted to share it with our community in Jacksonville. The Berman family tradition continued with their son Charles and his wife, Eleanor, then again with Edith and Milton’s granddaughter, Rochelle Stoddard and her husband, David. Now endowed in perpetuity, the Berman family’s generosity ensures that the concert series will remain a staple at the JCA.
Violinist Oliver Neubauer will join us on Sun, Feb 16 at 3 pm. Hailed as, “grippingly precise and gleaming” by the San Francisco Classical Voice, Oliver is the First Prize winner of the 2023 Susan Wadsworth Young Concert Artists International Auditions and is managed worldwide by Young Concert Artists as a Young Concert Artist Jacobs Fellow. Additionally, Oliver is a student of Mihaela Martin at the Kronberg Academy in Germany, and a graduate of the Juilliard School where he studied with Li Lin, Itzhak Perlman, and Donald Weilerstein, and received the Kovner Fellowship. Don’t miss Oliver Neubauer at the JCA on Sun, Feb 16, watch this video from the Young Concert Artists for a preview of his show.
On Sun, Mar 30 at 3 pm Ziggy & Miles Johnston, Australian guitarist brothers, recognized as two of their country’s finest young musicians with a burgeoning international career will perform for us. According to Australian radio station 5MBS, the brother’s performances are lauded for, “deeply considered musicianship, immaculate care, and superlative technique.” Winners of the 2023 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, Ziggy and Miles are the first guitar duo and the second guitarists to receive this prestigious award in the Young Concert Artists series’ 63-year history. Our Berman Family JCA Concert season ends on Sun, Apr 6 at 3 pm with Chaeyoung Park’s brilliance on piano. First Prize Winner of the 2022 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and Finalist in the 2023 Rubinstein Piano Competition, Chaeyoung is celebrated for her deeply expressive playing. Praised by the New York Concert Review as a pianist who, “does not play a single note without thought or feeling,” her diverse repertoire spans from the French Baroque to contemporary works by composers like Unsuk Chin. Park made history as the first female Korean pianist to win the Hilton Head International Piano Competition in 2019, and the success led her to Carnegie Hall in a solo debut performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra under John Morris Russell. Pianist Chaeyoung Park performs for our community on Sun, Apr 6, click here for a preview from the Young Concert Artists series.
