The Coplan and Goldman families have been sending kids to camp at the JCA since 2011. In December of 2010, the families officially founded the Coplan and Goldman Families JCA Camp Scholarship Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Northeast Florida (now the Planned Giving Division of the Jewish Federation of Jacksonville).
The fund was established in honor of Alvin Coplan, a founding sponsor and charter member of the JCA. As a child, Alvin went to summer camp in Milwaukee, and he wanted to give children in the Jacksonville community a Jewish summer camp experience without financial barrier. According to JCA Past President Stephen Goldman, Alvin’s nephew and one of the fund contributors, his uncle “had an emotional connection to the JCA and a heart for camp. Our local Jewish day camps are important, and all should be able to attend.”
In addition to Stephen and wife Jackie, fund contributors included Alvin’s sisters, Micki Green and Rita Chiappetta (husband Jerry), as well as Coplan’s nephew Alan Goldman and niece Audrey Goldman (husband Irwin Stotzsky).
JCA Summer Camps provide children the opportunity to spend their day physically active and gain resiliency through encouragement and a nurturing environment. Children will continue to have this opportunity thanks to the generosity of the Coplan and Goldman families. Alvin Coplan’s legacy will forever remain at JCA Summer Camp.
